New Accomplishments and Fond Memories

Well this is the first week I have ever swam three days in a row. And I feel good. My wrist is healed, thankful it was not a bad sprain. I swam 2700 meters this morning – a mix of endurance and speed sets. I did feel the effects of yesterday’s hard workout during my speed sets. I will see how I am doing by tomorrow morning when I run 5 miles. I have a feeling I will end up on my treadmill – the weather will dictate it in the morning.

My “second” workout today was taking down my 7 foot Christmas tree. The ornaments are packed away, the lights are wrapped and stored and the tree is on my front porch waiting for the next trash pick up day. There is a little sadness in packing up Christmas, yet also a feeling of cleansing as I move into the new year.

Speaking of new year – my niece gave me a wall calendar for Christmas. I opened it today and hung it on my wall in my home office. Inside was a thin piece of cardboard to hold it’s shape. I took it out and folded it to throw away. As I did, I was reminded of how my mother would have wanted it. She used to keep a list of important telephone numbers on a piece of cardboard on the desk in her kitchen. It made me smile. My mother died in September, 2010. Every once in a while little things happen that make me smile and remember a loving characteristic of hers. She was my best friend, and she lives in my heart today.

I want to encourage everyone to follow your passions, not just what is easy. It is in overcoming hurdles and barriers that we truly test our limits and abilities. There is much more we are capable of if we only believe in ourselves.
