On Valentine’s Day it is appropriate to begin by acknowledging the passions in our lives. Of course there is the obvious person that is the object of our affection if we should be so blessed to have someone. As a triathlete, there are many other passions to celebrate today as well. Sharing the passion of triathlon with friends and family is the best. Having someone in your life who does not appreciate your love of swimming, cycling, running, and racing can be a lonely place. I am fortunate to be surrounded by friends who understand my love of running, the aromatic scent of chlorine on my skin, and the joy of bicycle grease on my right calf. So to all of those who celebrate these joys – Happy Valentine’s Day.
My Valentine’s Day started as so many Tuesday morning have lately – in the pool with speed sets and total of 3,200 meters. Last week I did well with the first set of 4 x 100’s, however the 4 x 200’s and last set of 4 x 100’s were a challenge. This week I saw improvement. Once again I was able to complete the first set of 100’s all within 2:05 to 2:07 on a 2:20 send off. My friend who set the workout up for me suggested I extend the 200 send off time to 5:00 but still work to come in between 4:15 and 4:20. The extra 30 seconds rest made a big difference – each one I came in on 4:18, 4:20, 4:20 and 4:17. This was encouraging that my last 200 was my fastest. Until the last set of 100’s. Each one should get faster so I come in at 2:10 on the first and up to 1:55 on the last. My “swimmer’s high” from the 200’s quickly sank as I went the other way. My first was on 2:07 and my last was 2:12. I was spent. Endurance in a speed workout is my challenge. I am seeing improvement with each week, so I am continuing to push through and I will get the last set down.
This week is a bit turned around with travel yesterday and on Saturday I am testing to reassess my aerobic zones, so I have to rest this Friday. As a result, instead of lifting this afternoon, I am swimming again. I am off to the pool shortly to swim a total of 2,000 meters. This will be a pyramid workout with two 500 pyramids after a 600 warm up and 200 pull between sets. I enjoy this workout, it is a good endurance set and gets my heart rate up. And increasing our heart rate on Valentine’s Day is a good thing, right?
I am a girl who loves perfume and chocolates. Now as a triathlete my preferences have changed a bit, my idea of perfume and chocolate:
