Spring Break

My favorite Spring activity has arrived – my Spring vacation. As I type this I am sitting at a table at Great Lakes Brewing Co. in the Cleveland airport. Enjoying a Dortmunder Gold and having dinner waiting for my (delayed) flight, what a great way to start vacation. My destination today is Florida, but tomorrow my friend and I set sail for the Caribbean. More on the ship activities in a moment.

Ohio truly has had an exceptional winter. Forget the calendar, Spring has arrived. I am leaving lower 70 degree temperatures and sunshine to hopefully more of the same. Despite my frantic late night packing and over night thunder storms, I still managed to get a few hours of work in today and swim 2,200 meters. My swim was good. I did an endurance set made up of 100 meter repeats on 2:15 targeting coming in on 2:02-2:05. I am only doing the sets with flip turns and was holding 2:05-2:07 for now. Hopefully the more I keep at it I will break 2:00 consistently. I know I will, when is the variable.

Back to vacation. I will be sailing on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas. This is one of two sister ships that are the largest in commission. My running will do just fine this week, the on board track circles the ship and is 800 meters around. Ten mile long run at sea, so problem! Only 20 laps. There is a lap pool for athletic swimming. After doing some investigating I learned it is 11 meters long. As my training partner put it – flip, stroke, stroke, stroke, flip. Twenty laps in the pool and I am just past a quarter mile… There are a few ports of call and I think I will get some open water swims in. I also plan to share my adventure here too. The ship has an AT&T hot spot, so I am covered. Even on vacation in the middle of the ocean one can stay connected. What matters most is I am blessed – I am able to take time off from work, spend time with a dear friend, and see several ports I have not been to before. Now that is vacation.

I want to encourage everyone to follow your passions, not just what is easy. It is in overcoming hurdles and barriers that we truly test our limits and abilities. There is much more we are capable of if we only believe in ourselves.
