When To Go With the Flow

This morning I slept in – until 6:30. For me that is sleeping in on a week day. I wasn’t the first one up either. My brother-in-law’s brother was up and making coffee. Fortunately three of us here are early risers and fitness minded. Out of nine people and the things I like to do, that is not bad. The ocean was a little choppy, but definitely calm enough to swim. I picked a distance between a pier and a rock formation to swim laps along the shore. From my stroke count and pace time I am estimating it is in the 75 meter range. I swam what I think was 2,100 meters. It was very good practice for open water swimming. The waves would pick up occasionally and attempt to push me around. I was able to stay on course and not “go with the flow”. I will be competing in a triathlon in August that has a swim that is known for being choppy. The swim this morning was a good preparation for me. A few others joined me – one swimming and one water jogging. Water jogging was a very creative thing to do since it is a bit challenging to run on the streets right out of our door.

After swimming I was able to spend some time in the sun reading before the clouds rolled in. And the rain. Grabbing lunch in town and shopping a bit was a suggestion we all jumped on. Sitting on an open terrace we enjoyed a good meal, fun conversation and then did a little shopping. Sun would be better than clouds, but I also am learning that being flexible when the weather does not cooperate is important too. There is so little we actually have control over. That is not easy for me since I have control freak tendencies, but vacation is a good time when it comes to interacting with others to practice “going with the flow”. Besides, control runs in the family and I am choosing to control what I am able to – primarily my attitude. A comment was made on my post yesterday that was a great piece of wisdom. When it comes to family a choice has to be made as to if one would rather be right or have fun. I want to have fun….

An ocean swim, time in the sun, relaxing, reading, shopping, good food and good conversation. All fun activities and quality time spent going with the flow – something a few raindrops can not wash away.

I want to encourage everyone to follow your passions, not just what is easy. It is in overcoming hurdles and barriers that we truly test our limits and abilities. There is much more we are capable of if we only believe in ourselves.
