A Run, A Swim, and Another Dolphin Swim

This morning I mapped out a rout to run in a nearby neighborhood and was out the door before 7:30. Getting to the neighborhood, which is less than a tenth of a mile away was an adventure. Our house is on a very busy, narrow, winding, hilly road. Once I made it across the street and into the side street I was ready to run.

Being able to run felt great. The right combination of hills, flats, and no traffic. The big island homes are beautiful, at least what I am able to see through the gates and the walls that surround them. Cars drive on the left here, so I ran on the right. The only surprises I came across were the guard dogs. Every house had them. Fortunately my only encounters were barking warnings. Running down the middle of the road was my safety net when needed. It was a small community and I doubled back a few times running only two miles. A run is a run and it counts.

Afterward I still wanted to get a little more exercise in so I went out back and walked into the ocean. Having the Atlantic Ocean in one’s backyard on vacation is a wonderful luxury. I swam out to the pier I used as a marker yesterday and swam what I am figuring was 600 meters. In all I was able to get in close to 40 minutes of workout in.

Vacation is when I take time to unwind. Reading while reclining outside and getting some sun was perfect to finish the morning. This afternoon I took advantage of an opportunity to to get back something I lost. My dolphin pictures. The tour group in Cozumel was not able to recover the pictures I lost after swimming with the dolphins back in March. Today I went out to a private island and recaptured my experience. I swam with two of the most friendly and lovable dolphins – Jake and Stormy. Talk about a fun adventure to take away stress and replace it with smiles. We swam, we danced, we hugged and yes I even got a few kisses. Our farewell was a little ride the two dolphins took me on – one pushing on each of my feet, they took me for a ride around the lagoon. An even more thrilling experience than last time. And these are pictures and videos I will guard with my life all the way home. As far as vacation days go, this one ranks high.

I want to encourage everyone to follow your passions, not just what is easy. It is in overcoming hurdles and barriers that we truly test our limits and abilities. There is much more we are capable of if we only believe in ourselves.

  1. Sounds like a great trip. A dolphin was spotted in the River Hudson in New York City recently, you should come do the NYC triathlon! Crystal clear waters, just like your vacation :p
