Summer Days

This morning I tried out my slower, longer stroke in the pool outside. We swam 2,500 meters with the main set made up of 100, 200, and 300 meter repeats. A good workout to try out what I am learning. I am comfortable with my stroke, it is the timed kick that is taking me a while to adjust. All of the swimming I have done has my arms turning to one beat and my legs kicking independently. This style suggests kicking with the opposite leg of the forward stroking arm forcing the stroke side hip to propel the “vessel” through the channel the arms, or fuselage, is creating. That is going to take practice. My pace was similar to yesterday, about 2 to 3 seconds off of my 1,500 time trial 100 meter pace. Still faster than when I started swimming to improve time back in December. Practice practice practice – maybe a training mantra. At least this keeps me focused and unaware of my training partner lapping me in the lane next door…

Being a gaget gal, I had to update the software on my Garmin Forerunner 910XT before my ride this evening. My foot pod is not reading correctly and the pacing for both the bike and run was off. Each mile measured accurately, but if I glance down the pace could be any ware from lighting speed to snail pace. The software update improves the smoothness of the pace. The update took a bit longer than I expected so my 20 mile ride was reduced to 15. It was still a good ride, I could feel my legs were still a bit fatigued from a hard weekend of riding and running. After the first two miles, which is mostly uphill, I eased into my pace. The beautiful sunshine and milder temperatures really made the ride a wonderful summer evening experience.

Summer days like today with the sunshine greeting dawn before 6:00 AM and lingering on the horizon past 9:00 PM makes it feel like summer could last forever. The sweltering heat of the past week has cooled off to the low 80’s. But this won’t last, I won’t have the opportunity in as little as three months from now to swim outside, the sun won’t hang in the sky late enough for me to ride past 7:00 PM. Running – well that is why I love the sport so – an all year sport, day or night, hot or cold. At least one of the three won’t alter much once summer fades. But today it is summer – and July is a great month to drink it all in. The impending Autumn changes that come with August are still weeks away. So I celebrate today, the beauty of summer, and the long days to swim, bike and run. An endorphin rush to last all year long.

I want to encourage everyone to follow your passions, not just what is easy. It is in overcoming hurdles and barriers that we truly test our limits and abilities. There is much more we are capable of if we only believe in ourselves.

  1. At least it’s not just me. I have not yet been able to master the coordinated kick that the Total Immersion program describes. I’m doing well with the longer stroke, but my lack of coordination shows through with the kick.

    1. I discovered the updated video on Friday and found out today that there was a TI training clinic in Cleveland this past weekend! It would have been much better to have works with a coach. Will let you know what happens after I watch the video.
