As my Fridays have been going, once again today had two endurance workouts. This morning spin class was made up of an endurance ride that mimicked a few hill climbs as well. Working at a hard effort yet staying in the upper range of zone 3 without going anaerobic is challenging. Toward the end we watched a few clips from the classic cycling movie Breaking Away and road several of the rides in the film. Watching him draft off of a semi-truck is a classic. I think it is time to break out that movie again and watch it.
This afternoon my running program called for 75 minutes easy in zone two. Now that I know my zone two goes up to a heart rate of 140, I was able to pick up the pace a bit. The run went well, uneventful, but time to just letter mind go. After seven days of rain, this weekend is expected to clear up – a little. I have runs scheduled both days and I hope to run outside. Nothing short I another hurricane will stop me on Sunday from running my long run outside. Hopefully tomorrow I will get a short run in outside too.
As the daylight hours continue to get shorter, I long to spend time exercising outside and breathing the fresh air. Just less than three months ago I was swimming, cycling and running outside. Swimming and cycling are indoors for now. Yes, it is very possible to ride outside all year as All Seasons Cyclist has so well expressed. I hope to get outside riding by March, which would be two months earlier than I usually start. But running is something I enjoy outside all year, preferably when I am not getting pelted with cold rain. Being out in the elements sometimes is another form of an endurance workout…
Endurance, longing for fresh air, breaking away – reminders that not everything I encounter will be an easy ride. But every experience brings a lesson. Some easily and well learned, other long in coming but usually the most valuable. All part of the journey and the wonderful life I am blessed to live.
