I have never been one to hide when my birthday is or be bothered by getting older. As my father has been known to say “it is a lot better than the alternative.” Yes, to be able to take another trip around the sun truly is a blessing and tomorrow is my birthday. Having a birthday on a Saturday gives leeway to celebrate The Birthday Weekend”. Mine started last night. I had the opportunity to do something very fun – I participated in a CompuTrainer bicycle race. A CompuTrainer is far more than a trainer for a bicycle. It simulates just about any course and adjusts the resistance to mimic the elevation grade. It is all quite expensive ranging between $1,700 to $1,900. An area bike shop came up with a great idea – they have six CompuTrainers set up in front of a projection screen in the back corner of the shop. For $15 to $18 each, up to six riders race each other riding their own bikes on a course. Up on the screen you see the topography of the course, where each rider is, what place they are in, how far they are behind the next rider in front, current speed, average pace, RPMs, and power (watts). The trainers even know how to draft and drop you when you leave the draft zone. A group of six of us raced (I got dropped from the draft zone within the first mile…) and then went to dinner. A great evening to start off my enjoyable weekend.
Today I went to spin class with tired legs from last night but still enjoyed the workout. Several of my friends made it and having them around always makes the workout fun. After class a few of us swam a group of 100 meter repeats. I was able to keep my 100 meter repeats under two minutes both swimming and pulling. In all I swam 1,450 meters… which could also be calculated as 50 x 29 and being forever 29 is fine with me! We hit the hot tub to top off two good workouts. This evening I decided to go to a yoga class after work. My back is still very sore and tight, the stretching in the Slow Burn Yoga class was perfect for helping to loosen up. I am still a little sore but I can feel a difference. Topping off a good day, I had dinner with my running coach and another friend of ours along with her two adorable young daughters. Having some girl time really made the evening special.
Tomorrow is my actual birthday and I do have several things planned. This morning I was texting with a friend from my spin class. He mentioned he hopes I get all kinds of cool stuff and asked if I had anything in particular on my wish list. Six weeks ago I would have rattled off several things, after last night possibly adding a CompuTrainer. However after the past month I have had, I replied “health, happiness, good friends and wet noses” are the top of my list. After all that is what really matters far more than material things. I have had my ups and downs with this stomach virus, stiff back and my father’s health concerns, I put my loving cat down after 18 years of companionship, and have shed a few tears along the way. But I am truly blessed. I am feeling much better, my father is on the mend, I have a core feeling of joy, phenomenal friends, and I still have four wet noses to come home to. It will be a happy birthday, I have my wish list.
